The Underdog: Top Five Underrated TV shows

Since I watch way too much television, I've decided to share my favourite buzz-worthy TV shows that just aren't getting the right buzz. I have a super power when it comes to finding good music and shows; so why keep it to myself? It pains me to know that some shows are going unnoticed, even though they are beyond awesome, and most times better than the popular shows out there.

So here it goes:

1. My Mad Fat Diary

This one is currently an obsession. The new season (or series, as they call it in the UK) just started and I'm loving it. This is a British teen drama, set in 1996, which follows Rae Earl, a hilarious and troubled teen who was previously committed to a psychiatric hospital after attempting suicide. It explores the ups and downs of Rae's life as she struggles to move on and live a normal teenage life. Sharon Rooney is such a great actress. To play this character as well as she does -- I couldn't picture anyone else as Rae.

2. Luther

Another British drama (I might be slightly obsessed with British television), but this one is a crime drama. Idris Elba (one of my celebrity crushes) plays a brilliant murder detective with a genius mind that tends to get him into unwanted trouble. Idris is excellent in this role and does not disappoint. It can get a bit bloody and violent, but it's a crime drama, so it's expected. It makes the show raw and cringe-worthy... in a good way.

3. Bates Motel

Twisted, but addicting! The second season is set to come back in March, which I'm beyond excited about. Bates Motel is a prequel to the 1960's horror film Psycho. It follows Norma and Norman Bates, a mother and son who move into an old house with plans to run the adjoining motel. The Bates moved with intentions to start a new life and bury old secrets, but it seems that moving to the new town only added to the grave of secrets they already have. Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore are superb in this!

4. Common Law

Crime and comedy, the best of both worlds! Although this one has been cancelled (all the good one's get cancelled), it deserves a spot on this list. Micheal Ealy and Warren Kole play cops who can't stand each other. After an incident at work, their captain forces them to go to couples therapy to work out their issues. I know there are many cop shows out there, but this one is quite different from any of the ones I've seen. The comedic side alone gives it that extra boost of entertainment.

5. Emily Owens, M.D.

Apart from the numerous cop shows out there, there are just as many medical dramas. I'm a big fan of Grey's anatomy, but it can get a bit... dramatic? Although this show is cancelled, it's one of the few good medial dramas out there. It follows a medical intern who is fresh out of medical school and happy to leave her high school years behind. Until she realizes that working at a hospital is more like high school than she thought. It's a shame it had to be cancelled, but still worth a watch!

Bonus!
6. Rookie Blue

Since I'm a Canadian, I had to feature a bonus to the list -- a Canadian show! I have to be honest, this one is a lot like the cop shows that are already out there, but I still love it! Plus it's still running, so I thought I'd get the word out about it. It's one of those shows that get you hooked.
